Mentor Corporation, a leading supplier of products for the
aesthetic medicine market, has been continually expanding
their manufacturing and developing capabilities through the
years. A 37,000 square foot, LEED Certified manufacturing and research
facility in Madison, WI stands as the newest addition to
their impressive facilities.
The design concept is based upon the delivery of a
unique experience for visitors, as the facility functions
as a showcase for Mentor’s production capabilities. An
architectural promenade leads visitors through the various
functions, meanwhile introducing them to beautiful views of
the interior and exterior of the building.
Throughout the building a sense of transparency was
achieved to not only maximize views and daylighting
throughout, but also to allow a sense of visibility to the
interplay of materials, surfaces and planes.
In the lobby, a beautiful custom floor pattern
in 3 shades of bamboo further develops these
architectural cues, directing traffic through its
design while providing warmth to the otherwise
cool and calm color palette. On the second floor, a
bridge connecting the highly visible manufacturing
facilities and the conferencing spaces brings a
sense of scale to the grand lobby, and continues
the floor pattern found below. Minimalist railings
were designed to appear lightweight, avoiding
distraction to the view of clerestory windows up
above.
To promote staff health and fitness, an exercise
room along with bicycle storage, showers and
changing rooms has been provided. Bathroom
partitions are made of solid color reinforced
composite which is composed of extremely durable
and easily maintained dyed organic fibrous material with
recycled content.
In efforts to maintain healthy indoor air quality, copy
machines have been located in segregated areas with
separate outside exhaust; permanent walk-off systems
have been provided at all entryways to prevent dirt and
other particulates from entering the building. Low-emitting
adhesives, sealants, paints, coatings, carpet systems and
wood composites have been specified to reduce VOC
content and other harmful chemicals and compounds.
Flexible mechanical and electrical systems were designed
to allow comfort for employees while exceeding energy
efficiency requirements.
The Mentor Biologics facility serves as an outstanding
example of design full of style and function while enhancing
the health and comfort of employees and visitors, and
reducing the environmental impact of building construction
and site development.
