The HealthEmotions Research Institute Building is located within a 42,740 square foot addition to the Department of Psychiatry Facility in the University Research Park in Madison, Wis. This interdisciplinary institute focuses on the study of emotions and how they affect both physical and mental health, along with sleep disorders. The close proximity of the Psychiatric Facility allows for the rapid translation of research findings related to psychiatry and behavioral neurosciences. The two story addition includes a vivarium, a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) suite, laboratories, exploratory classrooms, subject test rooms, sleep study rooms, interview, observation, exam and conference rooms, along with support spaces and offices.

One of the design objectives for this project was the creation of a contemporary and comfortable atmosphere veering away from the stark, barren feeling of a traditional institutional environment. This was successfully achieved through the use of a warm, earthy color palette and natural materials enhanced by an abundance of natural light flowing throughout the facility.

I wanted to reiterate what a wonderful experience it was to partner with the Strang team on our recent HealthEmotions building project. In only 11 months, together we completed the design and construction of a stunning and functional building. This timeline is almost unheard of in our usual process of business, and also to do it for an economic square footage cost and under budget is nearly unthinkable. Our timetable was quite challenging and it was great for all of us to see this come together so well in such a short amount of time.
