| The renovation of Sterling Hall is part of a strategic effort by the University of Wisconsin–Madison, to restructure and modernize academic landmarks on its campus. The goal of the project is to accommodate research initiatives of the departments occupying this facility, while maintaining the historic integrity of the building’s exterior. This renovation includes the upgrade of offices and research laboratories. Project dynamics also include the design and reconstruction of green space with substrate and drainage suitable for a “green roof,” ultimately providing a landscaped gathering space for students and faculty to congregate.
Home to the Astronomy, Psychology and Physics Departments, Sterling Hall was originally built in 1917, and a six-floor south wing was added in 1959. The Astronomy Department is a leading center for the study of interstellar gas as well as extragalactic astronomy. Sterling Hall houses faculty members from various institutions throughout the summer months to assist in research projects. These activities require extensive data reduction and analysis facilities, and designated spaces for collaboration. |
