Foremost Farms is a dairy cooperative owned by about
4,500 dairy farmers throughout the Midwest. The existing
office building was designed in 1980 by Strang. This
50,809-s.f. addition and 26,954-s.f. renovation created
a seamless transition between the original and new building
components. Building components include milk testing,
microbiology, culture and applications laboratories;
a demonstration room, training areas, office space,
a cafeteria and an exercise room.
Foremost Farm's addition and renovation complement
the facility's natural surroundings through materials
and forms that symbolically recall the organization's
roots in agriculture. The program also highlights a
special characteristic that distinguishes the dairy
co-operative from other organizations: Foremost pairs
and exceptional commitment to its employees with a strong
sensitivity to meeting the needs of its dairy farmer
members. This characteristic drove the project design,
and resulted in a dynamic space that provides an engaging,
high-quality work space for employees and creates an
understated elegance and comfortable environment that
appeals to dairy farmers.
Interior forms represent aspects of the homestead.
The silo inspires the circular lobby; the open cafeteria
represents the home, and the conference room symbolizes
the neighborhood square. The interior also features
earth tones and durable materials, such as stainless
steel and exterior brick, as reminders of the age-old
practice of dairy farming and processing. |
