This 20,000 square foot cafeteria serves as a respite for employees at a leading research and development company. With more than 1,500 employees working around the clock, the cafeteria provides a welcome departure from laboratory space with a natural theme and plenty of light. The client desired a colorful, open and relaxing space. Soothing blues and soft greens accent the natural light that comes in from the glass wall to the north. Terrazzo flooring, custom casework, recessed lighting and pendant fixtures create a warm and inviting space. The project included three areas: kitchen/servery, cafeteria/conference rooms and storage/vending.
When visitors enter the space, a wide promenade features a tree motif in the terrazzo floor and acoustic panels on the ceiling. The design guides visitors past flexible meeting spaces. There are three private conference rooms, two of which can be combined into a larger room. Each conference room can be configured for dining (with tables) or presentations (with arranged seating).
The food service area features buffets trimmed in maple and aluminum and highlighted by leaf cutouts on the ceiling and pendant fixtures. The servery features a variety of dining options including hot main dishes, cold food/deli, salad bar, pizza, beverage stations and a mobile salad bar. Food storage, freezers, coolers and food preparation spaces are located behind the servery.
