Strang has provided architectural, engineering
and interior design services for several total facility
renovation plans and remodeling projects at the
135,000 square foot Memorial Union. Remodeling
projects have included the main entrance lobby,
Rathskeller, main dining room and kitchen, boathouse, theatre, Great Hall and Lounge. Originally constructed
in 1928, the Memorial Union is the cultural gathering
space of the University of Wisconsin.
Lounge
Originally called the Council Room, the Main Lounge
has always served as a quiet place on campus for students
to relax, study, read newspapers, or simply enjoy a
cup of coffee away from the activity of the Union's
first floor. With its marble columns, high ceilings
and spacious windows, the Main Lounge is one of the
most beautiful spaces in the Union.
The Lounge was refurbished on two previous occasions
- in 1947 as part of a major building renovation and
in the early 1970's. As a result of those alterations,
the decorative plaster ceilings had been concealed,
the terrazzo floor has been carpeted and linear fluorescent
lighting was installed. Strang's renovation restored
the space to its original splendor and installed air
conditioning. The project also restored historic elements
and added lighting. The room was repainted in historically
appropriate colors and the room's decorative frieze
was re-stenciled.
Kitchen
Strang renovated the 5,580 square foot central
kitchen of the Memorial Union. This project completely renovated and reconfigured the hot and cold food
production areas, dry storage area, supervisor’s office
and computer center. A key aspect of the renovation
was the replacement of most of the production
equipment, as well as the update of mechanical,
electrical and plumbing systems. The project also
included new floor, wall and ceiling finishes.
