Strang
is designing a 53,000 s.f. addition and remodeling to
the First United Methodist Church facility in downtown
Madison. The outdated existing facility can no longer
accommodate the needs of the growing congregation. Since
the congregation is committed to staying in downtown
Madison, the design team developed creative ways to
collaborate with the adjacent landowner to maximize
the use of the confined urban site.
The
expansion will improve the overall massing and composition
of the facility by embracing the forms, materials and
geometry of the existing sanctuary. The project also
will improve the exterior and interior entry sequence
to the facility. Additional spaces include an enlarged
gathering area (narthex); a new Fellowship Hall and
Kitchen; new, flexible multipurpose classrooms and youth
area; music rehearsal rooms; preschool; library; church
office and a light-filled chapel on the top floor.
