The Sun Prairie Post Office is among the first cutting edge postal facilities in the nation that incorporates a “retail merchandising” or “Postal Store” style of customer service. Along with the traditional customer service windows, the expansive lobby area has a self-service area, postal boxes and a separate Postal Store which is set up like a retail business with the merchandise accessible to customers. In addition to the customer service areas, the facility includes a workroom, lookout galleries, mailing platforms, employee facilities and support areas.

The form, building’s materials and site plan is designed to be sensitive to the architectural character of Sun Prairie, while conveying the image of a state-of-the-art postal facility. The brick colors were carefully selected to reflect those of the major public buildings in downtown Sun Prairie, while the brick pattern and curved standing seam roofs and canopies lend consistency to the entire exterior of the building. The vertical nature of the clerestoried entrance vestibule establishes the post office as an important public building in the community.
