GE Healthcare Lunar is a leading developer and manufacturer of innovative medical devices for the assessment of osteoporosis, metabolic bone diseases and orthopedic surgery. When this knowledge-based company encountered significant growth in personnel and operations, they turned to Strang to design a new facility that would meet existing and future space needs.
The 167,000 square foot facility faces southeast at the crest of a large incline to maximize views of the City of Madison and Lake Mendota. Facility components include 97,000 square feet of office space and 70,000 square feet of manufacturing and warehouse space. Additional components include a lobby, conference rooms, and employee cafeteria. The lobby, visitor lounge, boardroom, and cafeteria are expressed as curved elements on the exterior of the building.
Strang collaborated with GE Healthcare Lunar to design a flexible building plan that will accommodate future expansion on the site, with minimal disruption to the natural surroundings and the company’s operations. The massing and siting of the building is designed to complement the rolling topography of its park-like setting. Deep overhangs and continuous bands of windows create a horizontal expression that is punctuated by the verticality of stair towers on the exterior of the building.
